Excellent printer. Only complaint is spending this amount of money why would Canon not include a USB cable? |

Best bang for your buck on the market |
I agonized over what pro photo printer I wanted to buy for my young, budding photography business. Epson, HP, and Canon are the only real competitors, so I looked over their offerings. HP has all the bells and whistles, but they just lag behind the competition on many fronts.
My short list comprised of:
Epson R2880
Epson R1900
Epson Photo 1400
Canon Pixma Pro9000
Canon Pixma Pro9500
After reading over many, many reviews, I settled on the Canon Pixma Pro9000 and am very satisfied with my purchase. There are pros and cons to the Canon that I will outline below:
Cons:
Display life for the ChromaLife 100 dye-based ink is 30yrs behind regular glass (you can expect 40-50yrs behind UV glass, probably).
Noisy in standard mode! If you aren't in quiet mode, this thing will make you jump when printing.
Lack of included accessories! This didn't even come with a USB cable to plug into your computer. Don't forget to pick one up!
Lack of native CD printing (you can "hack" the printer to be a European version which allows for native CD printing....sadly Epson and Panasonic have the patents on it and Canon refuses to pay for something it developed simultaneously in Japan).
Lack of roll printing. This printer is limited to 13x26.61" prints which means you can't print very long panoramas.
Matte Printing - With only one black ink, matte B&W prints are not the best, although they do look quite nice.
Pros:
Archival Ink - Yes, they won't last quite as long as a pigment based ink, but if properly mounted, you can get 40-50yrs out of them, and in an archival album, expect 300+ years according to research.
FAST - This thing will print a full 13x19" print in under 2 minutes....hell, most printers can't even do an 8x10 in that time.
Ink Usage - This printer sips ink. Having used an Epson R2880 in college, this printer is a dream. It's much better for a young photographer's budget.
Picture Quality - The inks might not last as long, but they do sure as hell POP! They are better than any pigment based ink I've used.
Price - This is much cheaper than any other quality printer, and the costs to run it are much cheaper with the Canon ChromaLife Inks.
Notes:
Make sure your print heads are clean if you're going to use standard mode or you'll definitely get banding. I typically do 2 proofs of all photos on a 3x3 grid of photos, first using standard and applying some tweaks, then using High Quality to ensure that no further tweaks are necessary. That has given the printer time to clean the heads and I'm ready for my final prints.
I may update this review as I continue to tweak my process. |

Great Quality Printouts |
The setup process was very easy & so is the usage. It prints great quality photos from 4 X 6 to 13 X 19. The prints outs are fast and very quite.
It comes packaged with PhotoShop Elements 6 and turned out to be a good price with the Rebate offered by Canon
I would give it a 4 star overall for not including the basic USB cable which is expected for the price you pay for this printer. Additionally the outputs are not very sharp when used with third party semi gloss photo paper. I tried with the brand PrintWorks that you get at the local Target store for 1/2 the price you pay for the Canon semi gloss and the print out was not very sharp. The same print out turned out sharp with Canon semi gloss. Finding the Canon brand of photo papers locally was not easy. The only store that carries it was office depot after calling all the local stores around my suburb.
Overall a good printer. Will update this thread after a month of using this.

Great printer, but Canon will not honor rebates |
I love this printer. The quality and use of ink are outstanding. I can't really complain about the price, either. But I am extremely annoyed that Canon rejected my mailed in rebate for $100 claiming I did not include the UPC. I cut that out of the box myself, packaged it in a Priority mail envelope with everything else they wanted. Mailed it off.
A month later they say they didn't get the UPC and can't honor the rebate. Check out consumer affairs sitethere is a list of complaints against them for this stuff.
Don't count on honesty, but there is quality, so I'm not too bummed. |

Works Perfectly, No Problems |
I looked at printers for a long time before I chose this one. I have another Canon printer that I just love, because it never clogs, always works no matter how much time there is between prints. This new printer is every bit as good, and even better. It has almost perfect registration; that is, the paper aligns precisely as it should, with no annoying offset to one side or the other.
When doing borderless printing, there is also near-perfect registration of the printed image, so that you don't have to set it for a big enlargement to ensure that the entire area of the paper is covered. I am real happy about this as I hate to waste ink. I don't yet know how frugal this printer is with its ink; other reviewers have spoken about that. It DOES make quite a racket when it first grabs the paper, but that's no big deal to me. I have put three different sizes of photo paper (4x6, 8.5x11, 13x19) and two different sizes of plain paper (8.5x11, 11x17) through it and it handles them all without the slightest problem.
Be aware that this printer uses dye-based inks and therefore the printed surface isn't as durable as pigment-based inks. On the other hand, the inks are cheaper and provide more vivid colors. I'm using this printer to create 13" x 19" art prints that I'm matting and hanging on my walls, and the inks aren't much of an issue for me. I'm really happy with my purchase. |
